| The International
Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention
(ISM Code) addresses the responsibilities of the people who manage and
operate ships and provides an international standard for the safe management
and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
The Code establishes safety-management objectives and requires
a safety management system (SMS) to be established by your company.
1.2.3 of the ISM Code states that
"the safety
management system should ensure: compliance with mandatory rules
and regulations; and that applicable codes, guidelines and standards
recommended by the Organisation, Administrations, classification
societies and maritime industry organisations
are taken into account ".
Electronic Fleet Regulations provides an efficient and
cost-effective way to integrate your guidelines and standards throughout
your fleet.
Electronic
Fleet Regulations:
"save a huge amount of paperwork
and free up valuable internal resources, allowing you to source
the most up-to-date information on any given aspect of fleet
regulations" - Mike
Ridley, Fleet Director P&O Ferries.
By digitising your Fleet Regulations you ensure that everyone on
board, and everyone on shore has access to the latest set of
documents at the same time.
They can be made available on your ships' network,
your intranet, a VPN (Virtual Private Network), your shore-based
network or on a CD or DVD for offline or offsite access.
|
Updates and distribution become much simpler, take less
time and use up fewer resources - they become much more cost-effective
to manage.
Since your Fleet Regulations are held electronically,
you can include other media in them that you couldn't do with paper-based
regulations: a training video for operators of your new Marine
Evacuation System, audio files of example distress signals, layered CAD
(Computer Aided Design) drawings of your ships' infrastructure, and so
on.
What's more, if parts of your
Fleet Regulations are restricted (for the Master's eyes only,
for example) you can make sure that they are the only ones who have access
to it,
on board ship, on shore, or even on the stand-alone CD.
Searching for information is fast and effective - and
it's so simple that you won't require any training to use it.
Electronic Fleet Regulations
can be incorporated into your company without you changing any
of your existing business practices and
"one of the key
advantages of the [system] is that it constitutes an inexpensive solution
and requires the minimum amount of work to set up and run." - Mike
Ridley, Fleet Director P&O Ferries.
Electronic Fleet Regulations save space, are easier and
cheaper to maintain and distribute, ensure up-to-date information
is available to the whole fleet and require no training to use.
